“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” 1 Timothy 4:7

Sunya J. Hamner, 86, of New Palestine, IN was called to her heavenly home on Wednesday, August 30th, surrounded by her family.  Sunya was born November 30, 1930 to Raleigh and Pauline (Wright) Spivey in Evansville, Indiana.  She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Evansville and graduated from Bosse High School. She was currently a member of Zion Lutheran Church in New Palestine.

She was a dental assistant prior to her marriage to Carroll C. Hamner on December 22, 1957.  Sunya lived in Vincennes for 52 years and was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, the Harmony Society and the American Legion Auxiliary.  She was a Girl Scout Leader for 5 years for troops at St. John Lutheran School.  She was active on church fellowship committees and in the PTL of the school.  She chaperoned many school field trips, planned class parties, chaperoned Jr. Civitan events and baked countless cookies and cakes for church events and the teenagers who visited her home. Her grandson Matt has been the sunshine in her life since his birth in 1993. Sunya loved dogs and her beloved dog Dinky was very special to her.  Over the last 6 months, she had grown to love her 2 grand dogs Sugar and Teddy, teaching them to eat ice cream from a spoon.

Sunya’s favorite vacations were the many cruises she and Carroll took in the Carribean, along with the trips that included her grandson in Florida and Tennessee.

Sunya is survived by her husband of 59 years Carroll C. Hamner, her daughter Lisa (Kevin) Hartzburg of New Palestine, IN and grandson Matt Hartzburg of Indianapolis, IN.

Visitation will be held at Goodwin Funeral Home on Monday, September 4th from 5-8pm.  The funeral will be held in St. John Lutheran Church on Tuesday, September 5th at 11am, with visitation one hour before the service.  Entombment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. John Lutheran Church, Knox County Humane Society or Zion Lutheran Church in New Palestine.
